Nightguards are made of a clear acrylic and are typically worn by patients who suffer from severe bruxism (teeth grinding). Nightguards can also act as an orthodontic retainer to keep teeth from drifting for a lifetime.
For patients who exhibit severe teeth grinding, a nightguard can be worth thousands of dollars in preventing wear and tear of teeth, as well as crowns and bridges. Nightguards also help prevent breakage of teeth and porcelain crowns. The more often a person wears a nightguard, the more they are protecting their teeth.
While adult patients can benefit from wearing a nightguard, children are not able to wear a nightguard until their full tooth growth occurs.
For maximum protection, patients should have two nightguards in order to alternate wear.
